What’s This Thing of Ours About?

Meet Ossie Brown, a young Black teen who had it all figured out—until he didn’t. His dreams of playing basketball are cut short by an injury, and suddenly, he’s left questioning who he is beyond the game. Without his athletic identity, he’s just another Black kid in a predominantly white, privileged school.

As Ossie tries to navigate his new reality, a teacher introduces him to books written by marginalized authors. He finds himself in a whole new world—one where words have power, where stories matter, and where he can finally begin to understand his own. But when a viral “anti-woke” video shakes his school and community, Ossie is forced to confront racism, classism, and censorship in a deeply personal way.

This is a story about identity, resilience, and the power of storytelling—one that feels all too relevant in today’s world.

Sip & Read Pairing 🍷📖

Because you know I’m always going to pair a book with a good glass of wine! With the depth of this story, I recommend a bold, complex red—like a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Syrah. Something that lingers, just like the themes in this novel.

Until next time—keep sipping and reading!
